What to Expect

Welcome to an 10-day Kilimanjaro climbing adventure, utilizing the Lemosho Route, known for its scenic variety and relatively gentle ascent. This itinerary provides a comprehensive experience, allowing for proper acclimatization and an increased chance of reaching the summit. You will start and end your journey at the comfortable Springlands Hotel in Moshi, ensuring a restful beginning and conclusion to your climb.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport - Moshi

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative and transferred to a hotel in Moshi. Take the rest of the day to relax and prepare for the climb, with a briefing on the upcoming journey and a chance to check your equipment.

Day 2: Moshi - Londorossi Gate - Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast at the hotel, depart for the Londorossi Gate. Complete the necessary registration formalities and begin your trek through lush rainforests to Mti Mkubwa Camp. The hike is gentle, allowing you to enjoy the rich, natural surroundings. Spend your first night on the mountain here, adjusting to the altitude.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp - Shira 1 Camp

Today’s trek leads out of the rainforest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As you ascend through the lush rolling hills towards Shira 1 Camp, the trail gradually steepens. Your campsite tonight offers expansive views of the mountain landscape.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp - Shira 2 Camp

This is a relatively easy day meant for acclimatization. After breakfast, trek eastward across the Shira plateau, led by stunning views of Kibo’s glaciated peak. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where you will rest and have dinner. The day’s gentle pace helps your body adjust to the altitude.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp - Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Ascend towards the Lava Tower, a significant altitude gain that helps with acclimatization. After lunch at Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp. This day is crucial for acclimatization and will help prepare you for the summit ascent.

Trekking Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

Day 6: Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp

Tackle the Great Barranco Wall, an imposing obstacle that seems more daunting than it is; it’s a fun scramble with immense rewards in views and satisfaction. From the top, descend through alpine desert to Karanga Camp for overnight.

Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 7: Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp

From Karanga, head to Barafu Camp. The terrain becomes increasingly arid and rugged. Rest upon arrival, as you will start your push to the summit at midnight. Prepare your equipment and get some sleep before the night ascent.

Distance: 4 km
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 8: Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp

The most challenging part of the trek: depart around midnight for the summit, Uhuru Peak. Ascend through Elevation: From 4,673m to 5,895m to 3,080m
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Trekking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic
heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim, and from there, it’s a more manageable hike to the summit. After celebrating your accomplishment and taking photos, descend to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Day 9: Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate - Moshi

After breakfast, make a steady descent to Mweka Gate where you’ll complete

sign-out procedures and receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to your Hotel in Moshi to relax and reflect on your journey.

Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Day 10: Departure from Moshi

After a night’s rest and perhaps some last-minute shopping in Moshi, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home, carrying with you memories of the Roof of Africa.
