What to Expect

Take a journey to the land of thousand hills to discover its beauty and the resilience of its people. This itinerary takes you to 3 different destination starting from Kigali, a scenery drive to Akagera National Park, the home of big five. You will do game drives in search of wildlife, big and small mammals as well as boat cruise at Lake Ihema for a close encounter with hippos, crocodiles, water birds and a possible sighting of black rhinos coming to drink. You also visit Volcanoes National Park by trekking the famous mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. End the tour by a night at Lake Kivu to relax and reflect on your adventures and experiences from previous days. Departure to Kigali for your flight home.

Itinerary

Day 1: KIGALI – AKAGERA PARK

Depart from your hotel in Kigali and drive to Akagera National Park. Upon arrival, complete the check-in formalities and receive a briefing from the park personnel. Enjoy lunch at the lodge.
In the afternoon, embark on a guided game drive, ended with a sunset boat ride at Lake Ihema. Return at the Akagera lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the lodge and embark for a full-day game drive in the park to explore the beauty of Akagera and its biodiversity. Some of the wildlife to encounter are rhinos, giraffes, elephants, lions and leopards, hippos and crocodiles, different species of antelopes and over 460 bird species. Return at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK - KIGALI - VOLCANOES

This morning you will take a road trip to Volcanoes National Park with a stopover in Kigali for lunch before proceeding to Musanze. Arrival and check-in at the Resort or Lodge. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - GORILLA TREK

Early breakfast, then proceed to the park headquarters for the Gorilla Trek briefing.
Begin the guided Gorilla Trek for a lifetime experience with these gentle giants. After the trek, you’ll return to your resort for lunch.
Spend your afternoon at leisure with options activities (massage, visiting the twin lakes, or the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Fund)

Day 5: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - GOLDEN MONKEY TREK AND CULTURAL VISIT

Early breakfast followed by a briefing at the park headquarters. Depart for the Golden Monkey trek.
After the trek, return to the hotel for lunch, later on you’ll visit the Gorilla Guardians Cultural Village. Evening at leisure.

Day 6: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK TO LAKE KIVU

Check out and take a scenic drive to Lake Kivu, check-in at the hotel, lunch followed by kayaking at the lake. You may also tour the vibrant city of Gisenyi with an opportunity to see the border post with Congo, the busiest border in Africa. Dinner at the hotel or nearby restaurant.

Day 7: LAKE KIVU TO KIGALI - DEPARTURE

Breakfast and check out, transfer to Kigali for lunch and sightseeing. Later you will be transferred to the airport for your outbound flight.
